Description

Facsimile of the Varia 124 codex preserved in the Royal Library of Turin. Work created in collaboration with the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia founded by Giovanni Treccani in a limited edition of 750 copies (our copy is numbered 491). The Sforza-Savoy Legendary was created in 1476 for the Duke of Milan Galeazzo Maria Sforza and his wife Bona of Savoy: the codex can therefore be considered a sort of allegorical seal of the union between the two families. The name "Legendary" derives from the content of the work, a collection of legends taken from the Apocryphal Gospels and the New Testament: the stories of Joachim and Anna, Mary, Jesus and the Baptist, with a final part dedicated to the Apocalypse. The text is accompanied by 324 illuminated scenes, the work of the great Cristoforo de Predis, who sets the evangelical scenes in 15th century Milan, giving us a living testimony of the daily life of the time. The text is also embellished by 107 illuminated and gilded initials. The splendid binding was created by artisan workshops that recall the techniques in use at the end of the 1400s. The facsimile is accompanied by a Commentary by Pier Luigi Mulas with essays by Giovanni Saccani, Luisa Giordano and Pier Luigi Mulas
