Exceptional catalog that presents all the varieties of fruit present in European and North American orchards at the end of the 19th century, giving an account of a now lost biodiversity. This is how Alphonse Mas, president of the Société Pomologique de France, presents his work: “You have created over 20 years a vast garden fruitier in the same way that you want to find the greatest number of varieties, old or new connues in France et à l'étranger. I carefully studied the characteristics of the tree organs. You can appreciate for a long time the quality of your fruits and your végétative dispositions. J'ai fait des expériences comparisons sur les meilleurs modes de culture qui conviennent à chaque variété..." In individual sheets the fruit tree and the fruit itself are described in all its characteristics and the origin of each variety is reported : there are ancient fruits and new varieties created by fruit growers from all over the world. Each card is illustrated by a chromolithograph of the fruit described. In this volume, summer pears are presented in 120 cards illustrated by 60 chromolithograph plates, each with 2 fruits ( due to a layout error, the images relating to cards 5-8 are repeated instead of the first 2 tables (cards 1-4)
