Additional Information

Notes historical bibliographic

“S.J. Dupezard” was a master goldsmith active in Paris in rue de la Boucherie n°37, attested during the first quarter of the 19th century. The attribution and dating are made possible thanks to the presence of the hallmarks: goldsmith's hallmark "SJD", rooster hallmark 1st title (950 silver) and city guarantee hallmark of Paris, the latter two officially used from 1 November 1809 but introduced by law 11 Prairial an XI (Law 31 May 1803). The term ante quem is instead given by the subsequent law of 22 October 1817, which introduced a further series of punches used from August 1819. To complete the series of punches is the unofficial one depicting the face of a woman in three-quarter , used by the Association des Orfévres in the two-year period 1793-94, in all probability kept in vogue informally by most goldsmiths and silversmiths even later, as a further guarantee. On a stylistic level, the vinegar bottle draws extensively from the classical repertoire, using in the decorative apparatus figures of cherubs, masks, monstrous elements (in the figure of the dolphin) and the boy with old-fashioned dress and hair. In fact, the Greek-Roman figurative language will be widely recovered at the beginning of the nineteenth century, in line with Napoleonic taste and with the birth of the first French empire, supporting a figurative program aimed at building a direct line with the great empires of the past,
