Description
Italian edition (two editions for Sonzogno in 1814) of the text of the Constitution promulgated by the Spanish Cortes convened in Cadiz in opposition to the Napoleonic invasion and the imposition of Giuseppe Bonaparte as king of Spain. It established a regime of constitutional monarchy with sovereignty of the nation, which limited the powers of the king by establishing the separation of powers: legislative power was assigned to the Cortes, a unicameral Parliament elected by universal male suffrage. This constitution was soon taken as a model by the European patriotic movements, in the uprisings of 1821 and 1848
